APRIL 2004

27th - Some Tern migration in the Channel today with c120 "Commic Terns" and one Little Tern seen between 09:30 and 10:30.  A Cuckoo and 10 Swifts were also seen.

25th - This morning at Clevedon there were Whimbrel all down the coast along with 36 Bar Tailed Godwits, 4 Black Tailed Godwits, 2 Ringed Plover, 6 Dunlin, 3 Little Egrets, a Little Ringed Plover flew over the mouth of the Yeo and small numbers of Redshank, Oystercatcher and Lapwing.  The first Whinchat of the year was seen in Wains Hill Marsh

24th - 70+ Whimbrel were at Clevedon today along with 22 bar Tailed Godwits, 8 Whitethroats, Knot and a Yellow Wagtail, along with Cetti's and Sedge Warblers.  Seawatching from Ladye Bay this afternoon produced the first two Great Crested Grebes of the year as they drifted by.  

23rd - At Clevedon there were 3 Grasshopper Warblers, Yellow Wagtail, Cuckoo, 8 Wheatears and c20 Whimbrel.

22nd - The Dusky Warbler was once again found at Portbury Docks.  At Clevedon the first Cuckoo of the year was heard for the patch.  Also seen were 5 Little Egrets, 2 Peregrines, Knot, 3 Dunlin, Black & Bar Tailed Godwit, 35+ Whimbrel, 12 Teal, 12+ Swallows, Cettis, Sedge ( first of the year ) and 6 Reed Warblers.

21st - Two Common Scoter were seen at Clevedon.

20th - A Garganey was again seen on Blakes Pools this morning and a Lesser Whitethroat (first of the year) was also in the same area.

18th - At the Yeo today there were 8 Common Sandpipers, 15 Turnstone, 3 Grey Plover, 22 Whimbrel, 15 Ringed Plover, c12 Wheatears, 2 Cetti's Warblers, the over-wintering Spotted Redshank is now almost in breeding plumage, a Tree Pipit flew over and a few Curlew were seen.   A Grasshopper Warbler was in the lanes around Kingston Seymour.  A male Redstart was seen in a garden in Willow Close, Clevedon, a great bird for any garden list.

17th - Around Clevedon this morning there were 3 Redstarts, 2 Wheatears, 1 Sedge Warbler and 5 Whimbrel.  An evening seawatch produced 7 Common Scoter and a group of Kittiwakes.

16th - The first Swift of the year was seen along with 5 Tree Pipits and lots of Swallows and House Martins from Wains Hill, Clevedon.

15th - A Night Heron was seen briefly flying over Portishead towards the Portbury Wharf area, lets hope it can be re-found.

14th - A Tree Pipit flew over Wains Hill, Clevedon this morning with 9 Redpolls and a few Linnet.

9 - 12th Update - Over the Easter weekend, migration sped up.  The best bird was a Garganey which stayed for a couple of days at Blakes Pools (last seen Saturday ).  Warblers appeared in good numbers with plenty of Willow Warblers seen and heard along with the first Garden, Reed  and Grasshopper Warblers of the year.  A Goshawk flew over a Clevedon garden on Friday.  A few Whimbrel have appeared on the coast and Yellow and White Wagtails were seen.  The Dusky Warbler continues to been seen at Portbury Docks.

8th - The Dusky Warbler continued it's stay, directions now "still present at Royal Portbury Dock mid-morning in hedge and by nearby stream near Kerry warehouse. Access from Dock Road towards Portbury West then left onto Banyard Road and park by Celloglass".

7th - The Dusky Warbler was found again, directions as follows;

"showed well on and off between 13:10 and 14:00 at least, in usual evergreen hedge and hedge between Celloglass and the dyke; calling frequently and in subsong several times "

6th -  The Dusky Warbler was again present at Portbury, directions as per the 4th.

On the coast at Clevedon today there were 2 Little Egrets, 65 Teal, 4 Canada Goose, 11 Ringed Plover( good count for April ), 1 Grey Plover, 37 Curlew, 70+ Redshank, 9 Turnstone, 5+ Chiffchaffs and a Willow Warbler.

4th - After nearly a month the Dusky Warbler has reappeared at Portbury Docks, the directions as follows;   

"At Royal Portbury Dock opposite Celloglass; from jct 19 of the M5 take the road signed to the Docks and at the roundabout take the 2nd exit to Portbury West, follow the road and take the 1st left down Danyard Road and Celloglass is at the bottom end   

On the CEGB Pool at Portbury Wharf there were 7 Tufted Duck, 1 Gadwall and 4 Little Grebes.  A few Shelduck and Curlew were seen on the coast here before heavy rain forced me home!

Seawatching this afternoon from Clevedon & Portishead produced 2 flocks of c70 Kittiwakes, an Arctic Skua, 3 Gannets, Sandwich Tern and 3 Fulmars.
