AUGUST 2004

31st - An evening visit to Clevedon produced 1 Sanderlind, 1 Knot, 200 Dunlin and 50 Ringed Plover.

30th - At Clevedon today a Knot, Sanderling, Greenshank and 4 Common Sandpipers were seen.

29th - A Spotted Redshank was at the Yeo the morning, this may well be the same individual that has over-wintered the past few years returning.  There were also 11 Little Egrets, c400 Dunlin, 100 Ringed Plover, 3 Black Tailed Godwits, 4 Greenshanks, 2 Common Sandpipers, 15 Redshank, 9 Turnstone, 5 Knot, c80 Curlew, 6 Oystercatcher and 1 Sanderling.  There were at least 15 Wheatears (now with some males in the mix, rather than just juveniles and females) and dozens of Swallows heading SW down the coast.  

25th - A Kingfisher was watched well on the Blind Yeo and a Little Owl was seen at Dowlais Farm.

22nd - A visit to Clevedon over high tide this morning produced the first Curlew Sandpiper of the year along with c200 Dunlin, 150 Ringed Plover, 2 Knot (one still in summer plumage, see pic below), 3 Greenshank, 3 Snipe, c150 Curlew, 1 Whimbrel, 2 Common Sandpipers, Green Sandpiper, 5 Turnstones, c25 Oystercatchers and 11 Little Egrets.  Hobby, Peregrine and 3 Buzzards were also seen and a Yellow Wagtail flew overhead.  There were at least 15 Wheatears between Wains Hill and the mouth of the Yeo.

19th - There were 15 species of wader and a record equaling 15 Little Egrets at Clevedon today.  The wader included, 135 Ringed Plover, 3 Lapwing, 5 Greenshank, 5 Sanderling, 14 Common Sandpipers, 180 Dunlin, 12 Redshank, 12 Black Tailed Godwits, 1 bar Wit and 20 Oystercatchers.  14 Wheatears and 38 Canada Geese were also seen. 

16th - A brief visit to Portbury Wharf in between the showers produced a Hobby, 8 Ringed Plover, 10 Dunlin, 8 Curlew and 6 Redshank.  There were 4 Little Grebes on the CEGB pool. 

15th - At last some decent variety and birds at Clevedon with 5 Wood Sandpipers at the Kenn being the best find.  Also seen were, 13 Little Egrets, 4 Turnstone, Greenshank, 26 Oystercatchers, 11 Black Tailed Godwits, 100 Dunlin, 100 Ringed Plover, 8 Common Sandpipers, 2 Whimbrel,  80 Curlew, 90 Linnet, 80 Swallows and 6 Teal.           

 1st - PM update - there were 5 Greenshank, 2 Common Sandpipers and 8 Ringed Plover on the sea wall at Clevedon.

An early morning high tide visit to Clevedon produced 3 Peregrines, 2 Sparrowhawks, 8 Little Egrets, 2 Bar-Tailed Godwits, c20 Ringed Plover, c15 Dunlin, 10 Common Sandpipers, 2 Green Sandpipers, one Redshank, c30 Curlew, two Whimbrel and a juvenille Wheatear.  Small wader numbers remain very low for the time of year.

In the Portbury Wharf/Docks area today there were  c350 Dunlin, 12 Ringed Plover, 53 Curlew, 6 Common Sandpipers, 100+ Redshank, a pair of Stonechats with 2 young and 1 (possibly 2) Little Egrets.
