February 2004 

29th - The Twite was again present this morning near the mouth of the Yeo at Clevedon, along with c30 Golden Plover and 150 Dunlin.  At Portbury Wharf there were 5 Gadwall, 6 Tufted Duck, 4 Stonechats, c70 Meadow Pipits, 6 Redshank, 3 Curlew, c50 Redwing and 10 Fieldfare. 2 Tree Sparrows were seen in the farm yard near the Hand Stadium, Clevedon, and there were 4 Goosander on the Blind Yeo.

28th - A bitterly cold early morning visit to Clevedon produced c100 Golden Plover, c500 Dunlin, 5 Grey Plover, 20 Turnstone, 50 Teal ( other ducks numbers very low ), 20 Redshank and c10 Skylark.  The Twite seen earlier in the week could not be found.  On the Blind Yeo there were 8 Goosander, 2 Kingfishers, 2 Gadwall and 6 Little Grebes.  A Little Owl was at Plantation Lakes. A Marsh Tit and 15 Siskins were seen in the Gordano valley.  At Portbury Wharf there were 16 Gadwall, 4 Shoveler, 10 Tufted Duck, 10 Teal, 3 Little Grebe and 30 Golden Plovers.  6 Pochard were on Portishead boating lake.

23rd - A Twite was an excellent find on the sea wall at Clevedon, 5 Golden Plover were also in the area.  

22nd - Another bitterly cold day at Clevedon.  On the coast there were c800 Dunlin, 28 Grey Plover, 20 Turnstone, 1 Golden Plover, 1 Black Tailed Godwit and Spotted Redshank.  Ducks included the female Scaup, c180 Wigeon, c70 Teal and a female Pintail.  A Jack Snipe, Snipe and Water Rail were flushed from the marsh at Wains Hill.  A single female Goosander was seen on the Blind Yeo. 

2 Whimbrel were reported from Portbury Wharf.

21st - It was bitterly cold on the coast at Clevedon with little to be seen, there was c400 - 500 Dunlin and a female Pintail along with the usual other waders and ducks.  There were 3 Little Grebe and a Tufted Duck on the Blind Yeo.

20th - Siskins and a Marsh Tit were seen on feeders at the Gordano Valley ringing station.

19th - At Portbury Wharf today there were 5 Little Grebe, 5 Pochard, 3 Gadwall, 3 Tufted Duck, 1 Shoveler and a Kingfisher on the CEGB pool.  Elsewhere there were c100 Lapwing, 150 Dunlin, 6 Curlew, 5 Stonechat and 4 Reed Bunting.

A short visit to Weston Big Wood, Portishead produced few birds the best being 6 Bullfinch and 3 Buzzards. 

16th - A Brent Goose was seen at Blackstone rocks, Clevedon today. At the Yeo there were 3 female pintail, the female Scaup, a Peregrine, 2 Little Egrets and c600 Dunlin.

15th - At the Clevedon Yeo this morning, 10 Knot flew north, Dunlin increased to c1100, 4 Little Egret, Merlin ( with Dunlin for lunch ! ), 15 Grey Plover, 12 Turnstone and a Raven.  Good numbers of Shelduck & Wigeon present and the female Scaup is still there. The partial albino cormorant was again present.

14th - This morning on the Clevedon Yeo there were 5 Pintail, a female Scaup, 7 Little Egrets ( largest count this year ), 30 Grey Plover, 1 Black-Tailed Godwit and 500+ Dunlin.  A partial albino Cormorant was also present.

12th - On the coast at Clevedon, female Scaup, 700+ Dunlin, 2 Peregrines, Black Tailed Godwit, Golden Plover, Spotted Redshank, 10 lapwing and the first Cettis Warbler of the year..

11th - A Jack Snipe and a Grey Wagtail were seen at Clevedon Pill.

10th - On the Blind Yeo at Clevedon today there were 16 Goosander ( largest number this winter ) and a Little Grebe. Only one Tree Sparrow was seen in the farm yard near the Hand Stadium. 7 Coot and 2 Great Spotted Woodpeckers were at Plantation lakes.

9th - On the coast at Clevedon there were 22 Dunlin, Spotted Redshank, 4 Ringed Plover, 1 Snipe and 6 Lapwing.

8th - At Clevedon today in a cold NW wind there were 4 Kittiwakes, 2 female Merlins, c100 Dunlin, 8 Turnstone, c350 Lapwing,2 Ringed Plover, 5 Grey Plover, 3 Stonechats, c20 Oystercatchers, c80 Wigeon and 1 Short Eared Owl.

7th - There were 9 Goosander and a Kingfisher on the Blind Yeo and 3 Tree Sparrows in the farm yard near the Hand stadium, Clevedon.

5th - 3 Peregrine and a female Scaup were seen at Clevedon.

4th - At Clevedon today there were 4 Little Egrets (highest count for some months), 3 Pintail (1 Male) and c1000 Lapwing.

1st - A seawatch from Ladye bay this morning produced the first Gannett(an adult) of the year along with several Kittiwake.  The Gordano Valley held c30 Lapwing, 8 Grey Herons, female Stonechat, Buzzard and 3 Fieldfare, despite the high water levels in the valley, ducks were few and far between.

PM - A brief visit to the seawall at Clevedon produced 2 Little Egret and a female Scaup before the weather closed in.
