November 2005

27th - No report of the Upland Sandpiper today!  There were 4 Jack Snipe, Rock Pipit and a Stonechat in Wains Hill marsh and an adult Med Gull was on the Blind Yeo.  A Little Egret was in the Gordano Valley.  At Weston Moor, 3 Stonechat and 3 Water Rails were seen.  A male Blackcap was reported from a Clevedon garden.

26th - The Upland Sandpiper made it into it's 3rd weekend.  A Ring-necked Parakeet was seen near the Blind Yeo at Clevedon.  At Portbury Wharf Nature Reserve there were 2 Water Rails, 4 Stonechat, 26 Snipe and a Jack Snipe.

25th - The Upland Sandpiper is still present at Kingston Seymour today.  At Portbury Wharf Nature Reserve 8 Tufted Duck, 5 Little Grebes, 8 Bullfinch and a Peregrine (which took a Moorhen from one of the pools) were seen.  At Weston Moor there were 11 Snipe, 4 Buzzards and 9 Bullfinch.

24th - The Upland Sandpiper and Pale-bellied Brent were reported from Clevedon.

23rd - Now into it's 12th day, the Upland Sandpiper is still present at Kingston Seymour.  Other records from Clevedon included, 4 Little Egrets, 160+ Wigeon, 3 Shoveler, 150+ Lapwing, 420+ Dunlin, Spotted Redshank, 100+ Redshank, Common Sandpiper, 26 Turnstone and a Stonechat.  The Ring-necked Duck has reappeared at Portbury Wharf Nature reserve, but there was little else of note there.


22nd - Upland Sandpiper still present, see information on the 18th for access details.  Also seen at Clevedon were C500 Dunlin, 10 Grey Plover, Merlin and the long-staying Pale-bellied Brent.

21st - Another very cold (-3) night with freezing fog.  The Upland Sandpiper is clinging on at Kingston Seymour!  At Portbury Wharf there were 4 Little Grebes, 5 Tufted Duck, 1 male Sparrowhawk, 7 Skylark, 1 Grey Wagtail, 1 Stonechat and 15 Reed Bunting (all in 1 bush!).  At Weston Moor there was 4 Buzzards, 7 Snipe and 2 Stonechats.

20th - The very cold spell continues along with persistent freezing fog.  The Upland Sandpiper is still at Kingston Seymour.  A Richard Pipit was seen briefly near the Yeo.  Also seen at the coast here were c300 Dunlin, 27 Turnstone, 10 Grey Plover, a Knot, 15 Oystercatchers, Pale-bellied Brent Goose, 6 Stonechats, Wheatear (presumably yesterdays bird) and 2 Little Egrets.  A Ring-necked Parakeet was seen at the Blind-Yeo.

 

19th - A very cold, foggy day, but the Upland Sandpiper was still present much to the delight of visiting birders, please follow the same parking instruction as mentioned below if you intend to visit.  The cold weather helped bring some very uncommon patch birds to Clevedon with 11 White-fronted Geese, 2 Whooper Swans being the highlight.  Also seen was a very late Wheatear, Pale-bellied Brent, Black-tailed Godwit, Short-eared Owl, Merlin, 2 Peregrines, 3 Jack Snipe, 4 Snipe and c300 Dunlin.

18th - The Upland Sandpiper is still present and access has been sorted out for this weekend.  Directions as follows;  Birders must park only along Middle Lane at the Perfect Bite cafe car park at ST396674 then walk west for 0.8 miles past Channel View Farm, through the two gates to the seawall.  Please ensure these directions are followed, failure to do so could prevent further access.  Whilst your there why not buy a coffee and some cake at the Cafe as a thank you! 

17th - At Clevedon today there was the Pale-bellied Brent, 260 Dunlin, 5 Grey Plover, 1 Golden Plover, 100 Lapwing and a Merlin.  The Upland Sandpiper was still present.

16th - The Upland Sandpiper remained for it's 5th day at Kingston Seymour, where a Chiffchaff was also reported.  At Portbury Wharf there were

20 Lapwing, 5 Little Grebes, 5 Tufted Duck, 1 Pochard and 3 Bullfinch.
 
15th - The Upland Sandpiper remained in the same area.  Please be aware that access can only be guaranteed until Friday.
 
14th - The Upland Sandpiper was still at Kingston Seymour today.  Off patch, a very obliging Grey Phalarope was in Ashton Court, a nice lunchtime diversion from work!
 
 
13th - The Upland Sandpiper remained at Kingston Seymour, but was less easy to see than yesterday as it spent most of the day one or two field inland.  Please remember to park carefully if you are planning on going to see the bird.  For those who could muster interest to look on the coast at Clevedon the pale-bellied Brent Goose remained along with 3 Little Egrets, 3 Knot, 4 Golden Plover, 12 Grey Plover, 35 Redshank, 4 Turnstone, 20 Dunlin, Merlin and a Peregrine.  A couple of Brambling and 4 Stonechats were also seen/heard.
 
 
12th - A great wader at last!  An Upland Sandpiper was found by Richard Hunt this morning at Channel View Farm, Clevedon.  For more picture, directions etc..  Click here for the Upland Sandpiper page.   Also seen at Clevedon today was a pale bellied Brent Goose, which is very uncommon in the area.  A Purple Sandpiper made a welcome return to Battery Point, Portishead.
 
11th - There was scant reward for 2.5hrs of seawatching from Clevedon today with only an adult Med Gull of note.
 
9th - Highlights from a visit to the Clevedon-Yeo included a Brent Goose, 20 knot, 30 Grey Plover, 100+ Redshank, 4 Ringed Plover and 8 Dunlin.
 
6th - A female Snow Bunting was a good find near the Kenn Estuary today, also seen were 5+ Little Egret, 130+ Wigeon, 110+ Lapwing, 4 Grey Plover, 20 Dunlin, 120+ Redshank, Common Sandpiper, 30+ Turnstone and a late female Wheatear.  A male Sparrowhawk had a rest in my garden, poor quality pic. below taken through an upstairs window!
 
 
4th - At Clevedon today there were 5/6 Little Egrets, 120 Wigeon, Merlin (female), 30 Oystercatchers, 7 Ringed Plover, 6 Grey Plover, 70+ Lapwing, c50 Dunlin, 145 Curlew, 135+ Redshank, 38 Turnstone and a late Wheatear.  A Pomarine Skua was seen chasing a Herring Gull up the channel.
 
2nd - A male Black Redstart was at the Clevedon-Yeo this morning along with 30 Dunlin, 1 Ringed Plover, Wheatear, 2 Stonechats, 7 Little Egrets and c30 Wigeon.  A Redpoll and 2 Siskins flew over.
